China does not accept International Driving Permits (IDPs) or foreign driver’s licenses. If you plan to drive in China, you will need to acquire a Chinese driver’s license. Below are the procedures you can follow:
For a Temporary Driver’s License
If you are visiting China for a short duration, you can request a temporary driver’s license, which is valid for three months. This can usually be acquired at the traffic police department or directly at major airports in cities such as Beijing. You will need to provide:
– Your national driver’s license
– A Chinese translation of your foreign driver’s license
– A completed application form
– Three one-inch color headshots with a white background
– Details of a hotel booking for at least one night
For a Permanent Driver’s License
For longer stays, you can apply for a permanent Chinese driver’s license. This process requires:
1. Residency Permit: It is only possible for foreigners with a valid residence permit to apply.
2. Written Exam: You must pass a written exam on Chinese traffic laws and regulations.
3. Application Process: Submit your application at the traffic police department, along with necessary documents like your passport, residence permit, and foreign driver’s license.
Steps to Follow for Application
1. Document Preparation: Gather your national driver’s license, passport, residence permit, and photos.
2. Translation: Get your driver’s license translated into Chinese.
3. Visit the Traffic Police Department: Submit your documents and take the written exam.
4. Pass the Exam: The exam comprises 100 multiple-choice questions, and you need to achieve a minimum score of 90% to pass.

What you need to rent a car, and how to rent one
As a tourist, you’ll most likely be renting a car (more on that in a bit) for your road trip. Even so, there are certain requirements that you’ll have to check off before you get into it.
- You have to get an International Driver’s Permit. Apply for it online or head to the office — we prefer doing it in person because the queue is pretty short during off-peak hours, and you can get it done on the same day. It’ll cost S$20 and is valid for one year from the date of issue.

- You have to be at least 21 years of age and have held your local licence for a year. A surcharge may be imposed for drivers under the age of 25.
- A passport for identification .
- A credit card in the driver’s name.
